Bitcoin Falls Below $78,000 as Binance Security Breach Fears Trigger $2.54 Billion in Frozen Funds
Bitcoin fell below $78,000 on Friday after reports of a possible security vulnerability at Binance, prompting stablecoin issuers Circle and Tether to freeze a combined $2.54 billion in related funds. Bitcoin dropped more than 4% to $77,994.96, extending losses after breaking the $80,000 level on Tuesday. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said the firm froze over $800 million in USDC, while Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said more than $1.5 billion in USDT transactions were halted. Binance co-founder Yi He said Ripple (XRP) helped block $200 million in related transfers. Blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence identified 55 wallet addresses holding nearly $6 billion in digital assets potentially tied to the incident, suggesting the exposure may far exceed frozen amounts. Ether fell 4.84% to $2,247.45 and Binance's BNB token dropped 7.68% to $694.45, while Hyperliquid's HYPE rose 9.7% to $89.08. Binance has not confirmed a hack, saying it is investigating reports of a potential security issue and that user funds remain safe. Former CEO Changpeng Zhao said customer funds were secure but described the incident as appearing to be a hack. The episode revives concerns over exchange security after Bybit lost about $1.5 billion to hackers in 2025 and Bitget lost over $350 million to cyber theft.
