Hackers stole more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, in the largest such heist on record, with multiple investigators attributing the attack to North Korea. Crypto firms had frozen roughly $3 billion of the stolen funds as of Thursday night in the U.S. Binance said its initial investigation indicates the breach went through an engineer's laptop, allowing an attacker to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. The exchange said it would cover all losses from company funds and an emergency assets fund, adding that user funds are safe. It temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals, revoked the affected address authorization and engaged law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners. TRM Labs, Pangolin Intelligence and Chainalysis each attributed the heist to a North Korean hacking unit. North Korean hackers were blamed for the previous record hack, the alleged $1.5 billion theft from Bybit. A GSR executive called it "the biggest hack in history." CNN has sought comment from North Korea's UN mission and U.S. authorities.
