SpaceX Seeks 80,000 Tower Sites for Starlink Mobile Push; Crown Castle Surges, Carriers Slide
SpaceX is seeking to secure at least 80,000 cell tower sites to build Starlink into a nationwide U.S. mobile carrier and has held talks with tower operator Crown Castle (CCI-US), Bloomberg reported. Crown Castle rose 9% after the bell, while peers American Tower (AMT-US) and SBA Communications (SBAC-US) gained 5% and 6.5%. Carriers fell on competitive concerns: Verizon (VZ-US), AT&T (T-US) and T-Mobile (TMUS-US) dropped 4% to 5% in after-hours trading. Tower operators own and lease antenna space under long-term contracts of 10 to 15 years with built-in rent escalators, so each added tenant carries minimal incremental cost and flows almost directly to profit. SpaceX reiterated plans to combine satellites, tower sites and Starlink's existing ground infrastructure into a major U.S. carrier. It agreed on October 8 to buy up to 14MHz of 800MHz spectrum from Grain Management, pending regulatory approval, and the FCC recently cleared SpaceX to launch another 15,000 next-generation Starlink satellites for mobile service.
