Binance Breach Hits $6.3 Billion, Largest Crypto Heist on Record
A security breach at Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, has caused an estimated $6.3 billion in impact, making it the biggest crypto heist ever, Reuters reported Oct. 30. Binance said it worked with partners to freeze affected assets, with about $3 billion located so far. It gave no update on the remaining $3.3 billion, though co-founder Yi He said the company would cover "all hacking losses." The breach adds to a series of major crypto thefts that have raised questions about customer fund security. Bybit lost $1.5 billion in digital tokens in February 2025 from a "cold wallet" used for ether tokens. Ronin Network lost roughly $540 million in March 2022, Wormhole $320 million in February 2022, and Poly Network $610 million in August 2021, though most funds were later returned. Coincheck lost $530 million in January 2018, and Mt. Gox lost bitcoin worth close to $500 million between 2011 and 2014.
