CSX Corp. (CSX) on Wednesday reported third-quarter net earnings of $1.05 billion, or $0.57 per share, up 52% from $694 million, or $0.37 per share, a year earlier, as freight volumes strengthened across key markets. Revenue rose 12% to $4.02 billion from $3.59 billion, driven by higher fuel surcharge revenue and increased volume and pricing across merchandise, intermodal and coal. Operating margin expanded to 39.1% from 30.3%. Total volume increased 5% to 1.69 million units, with intermodal up 7%, merchandise up 3% and coal up 2%. CEO Steve Angel attributed the results to disciplined execution in moving more freight while maintaining safety and service standards.
