Quest Diagnostics Discloses Cyberattack on Quanum Lab Platform, Patient Data Compromised
Quest Diagnostics confirmed a cyberattack targeting its Quanum lab-testing platform compromised sensitive patient information, the company said in an 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The company learned of the intrusion on Wednesday and said unauthorized access included "certain patient records." Quest notified law enforcement and is investigating the scope of the breach, including what specific data was taken. It has not disclosed how many healthcare customers or patients were affected, when the breach began, or whether any hacking group has issued ransom demands. Quanum is used by roughly half a million clinicians across North America. The incident is the latest in a string of healthcare cyberattacks this year, following breaches at Stryker in March, Boston Scientific in August, and data thefts at CareCloud, Craneware and McKesson. It marks Quest's second known major breach in a decade, after 11.9 million patient records were exposed in a 2019 attack on a third-party billing company.
