Daimler Truck Telematics Data Now Drives Insurance Pricing, Credit Decisions for Fleets
Telematics data from connected trucks is increasingly being used to set insurance premiums and credit terms for freight carriers, Daimler Truck executives said during a panel discussion at the company's financial services headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. Kevin Bangston, president and CEO of Daimler Truck Financial Services USA, said the company's Detroit Connect system supports warranty triage and helps locate trucks in loan defaults, reducing losses. Daimler also announced a connected insurance program with Geico aimed primarily at small fleets, pricing coverage on actual vehicle operation rather than broad underwriting categories. Stephan Unger, chairman of Daimler Truck Financial Services, said artificial intelligence and analytics have compressed credit decisions from days to hours, potentially leading to better terms. Bangston added that analytics are used to build portfolios that perform better in downturns and to target business acquisition. The executives said the same transparency that can lower premiums for well-run operators also gives lenders and insurers unprecedented visibility into fleet operations, shaping rates and financing access.
