Equifax Opens Claims in $100 Million FCRA Settlement Over 2022 Credit Score Error
Equifax has begun accepting claims under a proposed $100 million class-action settlement over a 2022 coding error that misreported credit scores for about 4 million Americans. Eligible consumers must file by Dec. 28; payments are estimated at $95 to $280 each. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Atlanta in August 2022, alleges the error between March 17 and April 6, 2022, lowered scores for mortgage, auto loan and credit card applicants, sometimes by more than 20 points, causing credit denials or higher rates. Equifax agreed to the settlement on Aug. 17, 2026, while denying the allegations and any violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act. A final fairness hearing is scheduled for Jan. 22, 2027. Plaintiffs' attorney David Berger of Gibbs Mura called it the largest FCRA-related settlement in history.
