Pudgy Penguins' Abstract Layer-2 to Shut Down Dec. 15 as Consumer Crypto Model Fails
Abstract, the Ethereum layer-2 network built by Pudgy Penguins parent Igloo Inc., will shut down on Dec. 15 after failing to scale beyond its consumer crypto niche, the team announced on X. Users must move assets off the network before the deadline via Abstract's Migration Hub or its native bridge, which carries a three-hour delay. Funds left behind will be inaccessible, the team warned. Abstract's engineers will help projects built on the chain migrate elsewhere. The team cited a limited DeFi ecosystem, thin on-chain liquidity, little institutional crossover and a smaller budget than rivals. "Operating a chain focused exclusively on consumer crypto has ultimately proven to be unsustainable as a standalone model," it wrote. Abstract reported more than 325 million transactions, over $6 billion in decentralized exchange volume and more than $40 million in ecosystem revenue. It logged over 4 million Abstract Global Wallets, with brands including Red Bull Racing and Disney using the chain. Abstract is the second Ethereum layer-2 to announce a shutdown in days. Blast said last week it would wind down as operating costs outstripped revenue.
