Alphabet (GOOGL) shares triggered a bearish "death cross" on Thursday after third-quarter results missed expectations, sending the stock to its largest single-day decline on record. The stock's 50-day moving average fell to $340.26, slipping below its 200-day average of $340.93, per FactSet data. Alphabet has lost nearly 18% since early October. The 50-day average had held above the 200-day for 319 consecutive trading days before the streak ended as the report showed slowing growth in the core search business. Despite the bearish signal, history is mixed: Alphabet has seen five death crosses in the past 10 years, with shares higher six months later in four of them, averaging a 21.9% gain, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The most recent cross, on April 8, 2025, coincided with the bottom of that selloff. Separately, the 14-day relative strength index has fallen to 23.1, its lowest since June 2011 — a level traders read as oversold.
