OpenAI Weighs Purchasing Google AI Chips in Move Beyond Nvidia Reliance
OpenAI intends to purchase artificial intelligence chips from Google, The Information reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter, a move that would deepen ties between the ChatGPT developer and Alphabet's Google while expanding its compute capacity. Financial terms and other details were not disclosed. OpenAI and Google declined to comment. OpenAI said last week it would offer its frontier AI models through Google Cloud. The company already rents Google's chips, according to Reuters, and is one of Nvidia's largest GPU buyers. Google's tensor processing units have emerged as an alternative to Nvidia's mainstream AI chips, and Google began selling TPUs directly to some customers this year. Alphabet reports third-quarter results after the close on Wednesday, with investors focused on whether its AI spending is driving cloud growth. CFO Anat Ashkenazi has said a small portion of TPU sales agreement revenue would be recognized by year-end, with most booked in 2027.
