Britain's Padel Boom Shows Signs of Bursting as Operators Collapse and Rents Rise
Britain's padel industry is showing early signs of a bust, with operators entering administration and liquidation as rents climb and competition intensifies. Social Sports Society, which ran five venues, entered administration after a dispute with its financing partner, and Padel XO, founded by former Scotland rugby player Max Evans, has gone into liquidation. The number of courts has surged from 69 in 2020 to 1,825 in May this year, a 2,500% increase, according to the Lawn Tennis Association. A further 674 opened between January and August, roughly one every nine hours. At least £225m has been invested in UK padel, with backers including rapper Stormzy and former tennis champion Andy Murray. PadelStars CEO Andy Knee warned that investors are building too many courts in certain areas, citing a street in Watford with 19 courts. Savills' Jessica Hill said warehouse-based clubs face rent-review risk, while larger operators such as David Lloyd and Frasers Group pursue expansions that could pressure smaller rivals on pricing.
