Etsy Pilots Class 8 Electric Trucks in Texas to Cut Freight Emissions
Etsy is deploying Class 8 battery-electric trucks in Texas as part of a coalition pilot aimed at decarbonizing heavy-duty trucking, the company told Supply Chain Dive. The marketplace targets net-zero emissions by 2040 and plans to cut scope 3 emissions per dollar of gross profit by 52% from a 2020 baseline by 2030. The pilot, run with the Center for Green Market Activation and Smart Freight Centre, was announced in January and now includes 63 members, among them Amazon, eBay, Meta and Google. It is set to launch in early 2027. Participants pay for Environmental Attribute Certificates to cover the higher cost of operating electric trucks versus diesel. Carrier Nevoya will deploy new trucks late this year and in early 2027 on the Houston-Dallas route, using Tesla Semis and Greenlane charging infrastructure. Shipping is Etsy's largest emissions source at over 60%, with road freight accounting for most of that footprint. Heavy-duty trucks represent about 9% of U.S. trucks but produce half of truck emissions, while zero-emission Class 8 trucks are under 1% of new sales.
