A joint venture of Gilbane Building Co. and Turner Construction has topped out the $1.7 billion Wadsworth Center Laboratory in Albany, New York, Turner announced Wednesday. The five-story, 663,000-square-foot public health facility is the largest construction project in the history of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York. HOK designed the project, and the JV began construction in January. The structural steel frame comprises more than 8,200 major components totaling approximately 5,545 tons. Once complete, the lab will consolidate five existing New York State Department of Health laboratory locations from across the Capital Region under one roof. Healthcare construction has quietly boosted builders' planning numbers recently, even as the sector prioritizes data centers and related infrastructure. The project marks another collaboration between Turner and Gilbane in New York. The firms delivered the $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium, home of the NFL's Buffalo Bills, in June.
