U.S. trailer net orders jumped to 43,059 units in September, up 78% from August and 385% year over year, marking the highest level since December 2022, according to FTR Transportation Intelligence. ACT Research reported a similar surge at 42,700 units, up 311% year over year. The trailer spike contrasts with weak Class 8 truck demand. ACT reported September orders of 19,172 units, down 7% year over year and 15% month over month on a seasonally adjusted basis, while FTR's preliminary estimate of 21,300 units showed a 3% annual gain. Analysts attributed the divergence to fleets prioritizing trailer replacements amid uncertainty over EPA 2027 nitrogen oxide emissions rules and expected tariff-related price increases. FTR suggested the end of the Class 8 pre-buy cycle is shifting near-term spending toward trailers. Medium-duty Classes 5-7 orders totaled 20,297 units, up 27% year over year, per ACT.
