A South Korean container ship returned to Busan on Oct. 11, completing the country's first commercial round-trip voyage to Europe via the Arctic's Northern Sea Route, a passage that offers a shorter alternative to the Suez Canal but carries unresolved cost, reliability and geopolitical risks. The PanStar Acro began the 50-day voyage Aug. 22, sailing Russia's Arctic coast to Felixstowe in the United Kingdom before calling at Rotterdam and Gdansk, Reuters reported. It reached Felixstowe in about 20 days, roughly 10 days faster than the conventional Suez route, according to South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. President Lee Jae Myung cited the time savings. The government-backed trial carried billed export cargo but only 737 loaded TEUs of a planned 1,300-TEU capacity. Officials plan to analyze the data and prepare further trials, aiming to launch regular commercial services by 2030. Analysts said commercial viability will depend on schedule reliability, ice-avoidance costs, special insurance premiums and added fuel consumption. The route follows Russia's coastline and required Seoul to consult Moscow, potentially creating friction with Western allies. Environmental groups warn increased traffic could harm fragile Arctic ecosystems.
