UK Salon Owners Allege Sexism Over Tax Relief as Budget Looms
UK hair and beauty salon owners accuse the Labour government of sexism, claiming Chancellor John Healey's October 28 Budget offers hospitality a 20% business rates discount while ignoring their sector. In an open letter, industry groups urge a VAT cut to 10% for hairdressers, barbers, spas, and salons, arguing the sector is over 80% female. Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, secured relief for pubs and music venues after taking office in summer 2026. The British Hair Consortium reports the industry lost nearly 25% of employees last year and apprenticeships fell 70%, attributing the decline to the £90,000 VAT threshold and 2025's National Insurance increase. Spokesman Toby Dicker said owners stay small or rent chairs to self-employed contractors. The Treasury said businesses benefit from a £4.3bn rates support package.
