IREN Ltd. (IREN-US) said on October 21 it secured civil construction permits for its Badajoz data center campus in Spain, a 300MW project scheduled to begin operations in 2028. The U.S. AI cloud provider also established IREN Europe as its regional operating platform, targeting corporate and government demand for sovereign AI and cloud computing services. The project extends IREN's June acquisition of Spanish data center developer Nostrum Group. The Badajoz campus has secured the power resources needed for grid connection and will move into subsequent construction phases. It will use a closed-loop liquid cooling system to reduce water consumption and support Nvidia's (NVDA-US) DSX AI Factory architecture for high-density AI workloads. IREN plans to own and operate the European AI cloud services itself, with a European board overseeing governance so customers can deploy AI models and data locally. The company also intends to integrate acquired Mirantis and its k0rdent AI platform to manage compute resources and isolate customer workloads. The 300MW capacity is not yet operational, and actual supply and service launch timing depend on construction progress.
