Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said trade talks with the US have gained "a slight intensification" but no agreement has been reached, speaking to reporters in Ottawa on Monday. The talks broke down on Aug. 21, prompting Trump to impose 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, with Canada retaliating on a similar value of US products. Carney said Canada maintains "very clear bottom lines, red lines" and would still reject the August US offer, which would have kept tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos at lower rates. That round collapsed partly over whether the US would extend tariff relief to medium- and heavy-duty trucks. White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett told Fox News on Sunday a deal is "very close," while a US official said prospects remain unclear because Washington does not believe Canada is offering enough. Negotiations between Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Canadian minister Dominic LeBlanc are ongoing.
