Brussels is considering taxing large U.S. tech companies through a broad levy on major corporations, aiming to raise EU revenue while avoiding retaliation from the Trump administration, the Financial Times reported Wednesday. The European Commission is exploring changes to its "Corporate Resource for Europe" (CORE) proposal that would require all companies operating in the EU with annual revenue above €100 million ($112.32 million) to pay an annual lump-sum tax, according to six officials cited by the FT. Under its current form, CORE imposes a fixed annual levy of €100,000 to €750,000, capturing only a small portion of multinational earnings. One EU official said some capitals oppose a pure digital tax to avoid upsetting Washington, while many more oppose CORE outright. President Donald Trump in June threatened a 100% tariff on all goods from countries imposing digital services taxes on American companies. The European Commission, CCIA, Apple, Google and Meta did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.
