President Donald Trump said the US is monitoring a suspected plague case in Russia and will offer assistance after a laboratory worker died in Siberia's Irkutsk region. "We'll help them as much as we can," Trump told reporters on October 5, 2026. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the case is not "cause for alarm" but warrants attention. Nearly 200 contacts were placed under medical observation. The 28-year-old worker at an anti-plague research institute died last week after developing severe pneumonia. Russian media reported she may have been exposed to Yersinia pestis after breaking a test tube. Rospotrebnadzor disputed that account, saying testing found no microorganisms related to her work and no safety violations occurred. The agency reported two Covid-19 and two rhinovirus cases among contacts, with no signs of infectious illness otherwise. Irkutsk's governor said the epidemiological situation remains stable. Pneumonic plague is treatable with antibiotics if diagnosed promptly, according to the CDC.
