IRS Extended Filing Deadline Nears: Oct. 15 Final Day for 2025 Returns
Taxpayers who received an automatic extension must file 2025 federal income tax returns by October 15, 2026, the IRS's final deadline. The extension grants additional filing time only — not additional payment time. Any balance owed was due April 15, 2026, with interest and penalties accruing since. The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of unpaid tax per month, capped at 25%. Balances unpaid more than 60 days carry a minimum penalty of $525 or 100% of tax owed, whichever is less, plus ongoing interest and failure-to-pay charges. Tax professionals advise filing regardless of ability to pay and then negotiating a short-term or long-term payment plan with the IRS. Partial payments immediately reduce the base on which penalties accrue, while options such as Offer in Compromise or Currently Not Collectible status may be available for complex cases.
