Micron Technology (MU) announced the demonstration of a 512GB DDR5 RDIMM server module reaching speeds up to 9200 MT/s, citing power savings of more than 60% versus four 128GB RDIMMs — roughly 16W versus 44.2W. AMD (AMD) and Intel (INTC) are validating the module across server platforms. Using advanced vertical interconnect packaging with TSV-stacked DRAM dies, Micron said a dual-socket server with 24 slots could hold up to 12TB of DDR5, keeping larger datasets in main memory. It claimed up to 1.4x performance gains in Spark SVM-based analytics versus 256GB configurations. Micron expects volume production in the second half of 2027 based on customer demand, meaning the module remains in demonstration and qualification. The launch lands amid a global memory shortage. SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung said in July that 2027 could be the industry's worst supply year, with shortages possibly extending past 2030. German price tracker 3DCenter reported DDR5 prices at 544% of their July 2025 baseline in September, up 11.9% month over month.
