Britain's National Energy System Operator flagged a potential electricity shortfall of 1.9 gigawatts between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. London time on October 6, 2026, as wind generation was set to drop sharply overnight. The grid operator said it will review the situation again at noon London time. Such notices are designed to prompt generators to make additional capacity available; NESO often withdraws them once extra power is secured. Wind output is forecast at just 2.2 gigawatts at 6 p.m., about 40% below the prior day's forecast and a quarter of this year's average, according to market operator Elexon. Colder weather is lifting demand, leaving Britain more reliant on gas-fired plants to fill the gap.
