Carreyrou Praises Holmes Documentary "You Can See Everything" but Warns Art Shouldn't Obscure Theranos Fraud
John Carreyrou, the reporter who exposed Theranos, praised the new documentary "You Can See Everything" while cautioning that its artistry should not obscure the underlying fraud committed by Elizabeth Holmes. The film, directed by Nathan Fielder, earned an estimated $15 million in its first weekend, the second-biggest opening for a documentary ever. Carreyrou, author of the 2018 bestseller "Bad Blood," told the New York Times' "Hard Fork" podcast he saw the film twice and was "won over by the artistry." But he stressed the documentary does not cover the full story, citing legal threats Theranos lawyers leveled against him and sources Tyler Shultz and Erika Cheung for months. Holmes was convicted in 2022 of three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy for deceiving investors about Theranos' blood-testing technology. She was sentenced to just over 11 years in prison; a federal judge later reduced the term to 10 years and three months. Holmes and former partner Sunny Balwani were ordered to pay $452 million in restitution. She is scheduled for transfer to a halfway house in 2027 and release in 2030.
