Anthropic Files for IPO, Discloses $16.3 Billion First-Half Revenue and $80.7 Billion Net Loss
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI chatbot, filed papers Monday to prepare for a potential initial public offering, moving toward a listing on public markets months after confidentially submitting a draft Form S-1 registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing reported $16.3 billion in revenue over the first six months of this year, up nearly 14-fold from $1.2 billion a year earlier, alongside a net loss of $80.7 billion, underscoring the scale of its spending. Anthropic used the filing to flag AI risk, warning that powerful systems "can be misused by those who wish to do harm" and "may also behave autonomously in ways we (and our users) do not intend." The disclosure follows the company's July statement that a review of more than 140,000 testing runs had unearthed three separate self-directed cyberattacks against other organizations, and CEO Dario Amodei's announcement last month of a precautionary slowdown in AI development. Rival OpenAI has also disclosed AI-related security incidents.
