OpenAI Acquires Biotech AI Startup Orchestra Bio, Folds Team Into Rosalind Research Push
OpenAI announced on Tuesday it acquired Orchestra Bio, a four-year-old AI biotech software startup, and will absorb its team and technology into development of its Rosalind life-sciences research model and Rosalind Workbench tool. Terms were not disclosed. Orchestra Bio had raised roughly $20 million as of 2025 from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Atria and 8VC. The startup builds AI agents that handle drug-discovery workflow details for biotech firms, such as tracking finances and resolving clinical-trial scheduling problems. Rosalind Workbench is designed to help researchers plan experiments and analyze results. OpenAI said Rosalind has drawn clients including Moderna (MRNA-US) and Novo Nordisk (NVO-US). The deal illustrates large AI labs expanding into industry-specific software, with OpenAI and Anthropic building more tools for sectors such as pharmaceuticals. Rather than being displaced by a rival feature release, Orchestra Bio was acquired outright.
