UK Government on Alert Over Poundland Sale and Potential Break-Up Threatening 12,000 Jobs
The UK government has been put on alert over the risk of thousands of job losses at Poundland after owner Gordon Brothers unexpectedly put the discount retailer up for sale, fueling speculation of a potential break-up. The sale covers roughly 600 stores and 12,000 workers in the UK and Ireland. Irish investment firm Innovest Holdings has submitted a solvent offer for the entire business, competing against Ireland's Martin Property Group and the current Poundland management team. Gordon Brothers is demanding full repayment of a £30m shareholder loan it acquired for just £1 and could leverage the debt to trigger an administration if no sale is achieved. Union officials have raised "deep concerns" with Downing Street and the business department, with Usdaw poised to hold urgent talks with Gordon Brothers next week. The uncertainty has emerged despite strong trading: Poundland achieved sales growth of 6.7pc in September and 8.4pc in the first three weeks of October, with sales, margin and gross profit all running above expectations.
