OpenAI Tests Visual Ads in ChatGPT Image Generation, Expands Ad Tech Partners

OpenAI announced on October 5, 2026, that it will begin testing a visual ad format within ChatGPT that displays advertisements alongside images generated at user request. Testing starts later in October 2026 in the U.S. with an initial group of advertisers. Ads will carry clear labels and will not be embedded in user-requested images, the company said. OpenAI also expanded its measurement ecosystem, integrating conversion signals from Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp, and adding attribution partners including AppsFlyer, Branch, and Singular. Early results cited by OpenAI include WeightWatchers achieving a cost per acquisition 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark via DV Rockerbox, and 93% of Portland Leather's ChatGPT Ads visitors being new customers via Triple Whale. OpenAI is developing brand suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science, which will not access real user conversations. ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion weekly users. The ad push supports revenue diversification ahead of a planned 2026 IPO.
