Bombardier to Invest $270 Million in US Expansion After Trump Drops Ban Threat
President Donald Trump said late Thursday that Bombardier will invest $270 million in the United States, days after he dropped threats to ban the Canadian jet maker from the country. The company said Friday it will recruit for 500 roles across the US and create an additional 300 jobs through expansion projects, with an initial investment of about $270 million for infrastructure growth in the first phase. Hiring will span Texas, Kansas, Indiana and Connecticut. The September ban threat became a political issue in Kansas, where Bombardier employs 1,500 people in Wichita, prompting calls to the White House from Kansas lawmakers including Republican Senator Roger Marshall. CEO Eric Martel cited "constructive conversations with the U.S. administration" as the basis for the investment. Bombardier, which established its US headquarters in Kansas in 1990, has 3,500 US jobs, more than 40% in Wichita.
