IBA Treats First Patient in ConformalFLASH Head and Neck Cancer Trial at Penn Medicine

Ion Beam Applications SA (IBAB.BR) said the first patient was treated in C-FLASH-01, the first human feasibility study of its investigational ConformalFLASH proton therapy, at Penn Medicine. The IBA-sponsored trial is being conducted under an FDA-authorized investigational device exemption. ConformalFLASH is designed to combine proton therapy's precise targeting with ultra-high dose rate radiation delivery; its potential clinical benefits remain under investigation. The study evaluates delivering treatment in fractions using Bragg peak proton beams to patients requiring repeat radiation for head and neck cancer who cannot undergo surgical removal. Collaborators include RaySearch Laboratories, which supplies research treatment-planning software; 3D Systems, which supports patient-specific 3D-printed devices; and dot decimal, which supplies precision-milled patient-specific apertures. IBA Dosimetry is developing FLASH-enabled radiation measurement solutions. IBA said trial evidence may inform further development of ConformalFLASH and its potential integration into clinical proton therapy workflows. On Tuesday, IBAB.BR closed at EUR 16.18, down 1.94% on the Brussels Exchange.
