Volkswagen's Xpeng-Built ID. UNYX 08 Sells 267 Units a Month, Far Below 3,622 Target

Volkswagen's first model developed with Xpeng, the ID. UNYX 08 electric SUV, averaged 267 sales a month from its April launch through August, a fraction of the 3,622 monthly units the company targeted for this year, according to ThinkerCar data and company planning documents. China, which once supplied nearly 50% of group profits, now contributes about 10%, forcing the automaker into the largest restructuring in its 89-year history. The SUV, priced at about $34,260, was outsold by similarly priced rivals: Xiaomi sold almost 57,000 YU7s and Zeekr more than 21,000 7Xs in the same April-August period, versus roughly 1,300 UNYX 08s. Volkswagen sold the vehicle through a new, limited Volkswagen Anhui dealer network of 166 outlets rather than its 3,000-plus FAW and SAIC dealerships, leaving many consumers unaware of the model. Volkswagen cut its 2026 UNYX 08 sales projection by more than 60% to 12,300 vehicles and is now advertising the SUV at a 17% discount. It still forecasts nearly 4,900 monthly sales for the Xpeng-developed UNYX 09 sedan, due in showrooms this month. Volkswagen's China market share fell to 10% in the first eight months of the year from one in five cars in 2019.
