The European Union will not drill for or buy oil and gas produced in the Arctic, reaffirming its "stay in the ground" stance in a new Arctic strategy released this week, even as the bloc faces severe fuel shortages and soaring gas prices ahead of peak winter demand. "Our position on Arctic oil, gas and coal has not changed," a senior EU official said. "We will not drill in the Arctic, and we will not buy hydrocarbons from the Arctic." The strategy, the first update in five years, prioritizes security and outlines a Maritime Security Hub to monitor and repair subsea cables. The document dropped the word "moratorium" on Arctic drilling, a change Norway's Energy Minister Terje Aasland welcomed, saying production in Norway's northern regions "will become increasingly important in the years ahead." Norway holds the largest Arctic presence in Western Europe and has committed to developing its Barents Sea resources. EU countries hold minimal Arctic territory; only Sweden and Finland have small footprints, while Denmark's claim via Greenland is formal rather than practical.
