PNC CEO Bill Demchak said Monday that financial transactions conducted solely by artificial intelligence agents will never happen, warning that banks allowing account activity without human oversight will be defrauded. Speaking at the Money20/20 conference in Las Vegas, he said no bank will permit agentic transactions without a human in the loop. Demchak said tech companies deploying AI agents, such as Meta's Muse launched six weeks ago, would need to assume liability for resulting harm. "There'd have to be a massive liability shift," he said, calling the firms "kids in a room with a new toy" handling money. PNC has paused major M&A to accelerate its "AI factory" buildout, Demchak said on the bank's third-quarter earnings call last week. He said agents may help organize transactions or offer ideas, but he is "scared to death" about fraud and banks must add friction, not remove it. JPMorgan Chase and Citi are among banks blocking AI agents from customer accounts.
