PNC CEO Bill Demchak said banks lacking their own compute infrastructure — data centers and GPUs — will fall behind on artificial intelligence, fueling a wave of mergers and acquisitions, particularly among small banks. He called the coming period "a target-rich environment" in an interview last week at the Money20/20 conference in Las Vegas. Demchak said PNC's AI buildout will cost "hundreds of millions to save billions" annually, with meaningful progress expected within three years. He cautioned that a large acquisition would force a two- or three-year integration pause on AI, warning "this game could be over in two years." The PNC chief said the hardest challenges are organizational — retraining staff and reducing reliance on offshore contractors — and predicted disruption for coders across the technology sector. PNC will build and own its AI applications but remains open to buying tech components that fit without lock-in risk.
