Houston Tops ULI Homebuilding Outlook as Unsold Inventory Mounts
Houston jumped from third to first on the Urban Land Institute and PricewaterhouseCoopers' homebuilding prospects list, even as its housing supply shows signs of oversupply, according to the groups' annual markets-to-watch report. Houston slipped one spot to sixth on the main list of real estate markets to watch, buoyed by energy-sector and industrial growth. It ranked fifth in 2025's projections and third in 2024's, the Houston Business Journal reported. Supply pressure is mounting: single-family and condo listings reached 16,660 in September, up 80% over three years. Zillow ranked Houston first nationally for "accidental landlords," with about 4.3% of homes listed for rent originally listed for sale—double the national average. Demand remains solid above $800,000 but is flat or negative between $300,000 and $800,000.
