Starbucks Corp. faces a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging eight protein beverages labeled "Sugar-Free" contain 13 to 21 grams of sugar per venti serving, filed Friday in federal court in Seattle. The suit, brought by Hagens Berman and Sterlington PLLC, targets the Sugar-Free Vanilla Protein Latte, Sugar-Free Caramel Protein Latte, Sugar-Free Vanilla Protein Matcha, Sugar-Free Caramel Protein Matcha and iced versions. The sugar comes from lactose in milk. Federal rules bar "sugar-free" labeling above 0.5 grams per 12-ounce serving, the complaint states, and allege Starbucks omitted required disclosures that the drinks are not low-calorie or intended for weight management. Plaintiffs seek unspecified damages for false advertising and state consumer protection violations; a favorable ruling could force renaming. Starbucks launched the line in September 2025 and did not respond to a request for comment by Monday. Hagens Berman also pursues other cases against Starbucks.
