OpenAI CEO Sam Altman questioned the practice of stockpiling DRAM in personal computers, arguing scarce memory should be concentrated in cloud data centers to maximize utilization as AI demand tightens global supply. "From a global resource allocation standpoint, having everyone leave the world's limited DRAM idle in their own computers at 5% utilization is actually quite bad," Altman said in an interview on the YouTube channel "Cheeky Pint." He said memory makers remain cautious about expanding capacity after past cycles of overexpansion and financial distress, even as some now generate roughly $100 billion in annual free cash flow. "The invisible hand is failing right now," he said, adding that OpenAI is pursuing in-house chips, data centers and robotics. Altman also said large language models are finding software vulnerabilities faster than expected, potentially requiring redesigned routers, operating systems and applications, and that sandbox isolation alone may not contain future high-capability models.
