Samsung Adds 2nm Equipment Orders at Texas Fab, Targets 20,000 Monthly Wafers by Late 2027
Samsung Electronics has placed additional equipment orders for its first Taylor, Texas fab capable of supporting roughly 6,000 2-nanometer wafers per month, according to ZDNet Korea, citing industry sources on Friday. Combined with earlier equipment investment and initial pilot lines, the plant is expected to reach its design ceiling of 20,000 wafers per month in the second half of 2027. Samsung has invested in equipment supporting 10,000 wafers per month since late 2025, with the latest purchase intended to fill remaining space at the first fab. An industry official said orders have begun for equipment to be installed from the end of this year, with shipment growth potentially starting in the second half of next year. The Taylor site, announced in 2021 with an initial $17 billion investment, counts Tesla (TSLA) among its main customers. Samsung has targeted 2026 for the first fab's start of operations. Its 2nm process uses gate-all-around (GAA) transistor architecture with multi-bridge channel FET (MBCFET) technology. Samsung plans to break ground on a second Taylor fab by the end of this year, targeting 2030 operations, and has asked equipment suppliers to secure safety certifications in advance.
