Canadian stocks closed mostly higher Tuesday, extending a modest rebound as the S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 130.96 points, or 0.4 percent, to 35,649.51, moving further off its lowest levels in more than two months. Strength on Bay Street partly reflected a pullback in U.S. treasury yields after their surge to multi-decade highs, lifting rate-sensitive utilities. The S&P/TSX Capped Utilities Index gained 1.3 percent, and telecom stocks also showed notable strength, though most major sectors posted only modest moves. Statistics Canada reported the Canadian trade surplus widened to C$4.2 billion in August from C$787 million in July, as merchandise exports surged 2.5 percent while imports fell 2.0 percent.
