Taiwan Stocks Eye 50,000 Level After Five-Session Rally; TSE Gains 0.22%
Taiwan's benchmark index may extend gains Wednesday after five straight winning sessions added more than 2,150 points, or 4.6 percent, leaving the Taiwan Stock Exchange just above the 49,820-point plateau. The TSE rose 110.51 points, or 0.22 percent, to close Tuesday at 49,822.55, trading between 49,479.69 and 49,968.92. Finance, technology and plastics gains were offset by weakness in communications and electronics. Wall Street's firm lead supported sentiment: the Dow gained 253.38 points, or 0.49 percent, to 51,521.28; the NASDAQ added 122.48 points, or 0.45 percent, to a record 27,599.79; and the S&P 500 rose 44.98 points, or 0.58 percent, to a record 7,818.93. Treasury yields retreated from multi-decade highs, and softening oil prices lifted the Asian outlook. November West Texas Intermediate crude slipped $0.18, or 0.2 percent, to $89.25 a barrel. Taiwan releases September consumer price data later Wednesday; August inflation rose 0.13 percent on month and 2.04 percent on year.
