UPS Expands RFID Labeling to 315 Customer Sites, Targets 6 Million Daily Packages by 2027
UPS has established radio-frequency identification labeling capabilities at 315 upstream customer locations, CEO Carol Tomé said on a Q3 earnings call Tuesday, aiming to double the program's volume in the coming years. The initiative currently handles 3 million packages daily at customer locations, up from 2.2 million per day reported in July, and is expected to reach 6 million packages a day in 2027, Tomé said. Shippers using the capability include technology products distributor Ingram Micro and a high-end jeweler. UPS projects it will deliver more than 4 billion RFID-enabled packages by the end of 2026, eliminating billions of manual scans. Tomé said nearly 70% of all UPS packages will flow through an automated process in Q4, up from 66.5% at the end of 2025, adding that the network is "more automated, more efficient and better positioned than ever to handle the holiday surge."
