Walmart plans to build a 744,433-square-foot distribution center in Cibolo, Texas, representing an estimated $400 million investment, according to a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation document dated Oct. 28. The filing states construction is set to break ground in February, with an expected completion date of Aug. 1, 2029. The project includes office space. The new build follows Walmart's earlier guidance that supply chain spending will "peak" over the next two years as the retailer automates its distribution network to cut shipping costs through operational efficiencies. The document did not specify whether the Cibolo facility will include automation technology. Walmart did not respond to a request for comment. The retailer is also adjusting its Texas footprint, having outlined plans earlier this year for another phase of a distribution center remodel. Elsewhere, Walmart opened a 900,000-square-foot "next-generation" fulfillment center in Stockton, California, this month and announced plans for a 1.5-million-square-foot facility in Georgia, with construction slated to begin late this year.
